YOUR EDUCATED ANCESTORS IN BRIGHTON
About Me
I first became aware of the transient nature of educational ideology as a teen involved in a school play depicting 'classroom' scenes in different historical periods. This transience went on to punctuate my career in teaching and tutoring and has been further confirmed by the historical research in which I’ve indulged whenever time has permitted.

So this is a miscellany of my research and writing on the evolving educational scene in Brighton (plus a touch of Hove!) during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Current project
Montpelier and Clifton Hill
It all happened here!

The area played a crucial role in the welfare and education of children of all classes in the 19th century and well into the 20th century. It was also a hotbed of radical adult education enterprises.
A work in progress, my aim is to highlight educational institutions based in the area from the 1820s, when it began to be seriously developed, until the early years of the 20th century. I will also highlight influential individuals living here who, in one way or another, contributed to Brighton's educational landscape for both children and adults, the underprivileged and more affluent.
